This region goes from Limón to the border with Panamá, offering an extraordinary combination of afro Caribbean culture, natural landscape represented mainly by the Tropical Ra inforest and astonishing beaches in Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Gandoca Manzanillo.   

Tourists will be able to enjoy the varied colors of the sand in the beaches (yellow, grey and black) and the magnificent Caribbean Sea. Moreover, there is great variety of entertainment for those who love adventure and natural history complemented with culture, gastronomy and music. This fantastic zone has a unique natural stamp: the coral reef, vegetation and forests.

They are currently considered unique conservation places in the Caribbean General Zone.  For this reason, Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo Reserve are recognized worldwide, this guarantees their natural beauty.

Weather:

The weather is typical of the Caribbean coast, with less rain from January to April and since September up to beginning October.

You can find animal species like: manatee, spiny lobster, crocodile, caiman, nutria, saino, paca, red spider monkey, “curré,” mash-harrier, parrot, pavon, among other species

 

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

 

GANDOCA—MANZANILLO

Located in the Caribbean Coast, in the county of Talamanca.  It is a wildlife protection zone, especially for endangered species and those that are not so numerous. It also protects the only natural mangrove large oyster shoal in the coral zone of the coastal strip.

It is classified within the category of Tropical Ra inforest, since it has a lagoon.

Some of the main aspects for which this zone is recognized are: its great diversity of land habitats, its primary forests and its numerous fresh water and marine environments, which include the coral reef that is best preserved in the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica. This becomes a big attraction for scientists and tourists.

Undoubtedly, this is a charming place where tourists will have the opportunity to see beautiful landscapes from a viewpoint, watch the Baula turtles spawning, watch dolphins, go scuba diving or walk through the paths, practice kayaking in the ocean, go horse riding or fishing, birdwatching, visit indigenous reserves, take a boat ride, etc.

 

CAHUITA NATIONAL PARK

This park has the mission of protecting the flora and fauna, the coral reefs and some marine ecosystems.  It has one of the best developed coral reefs of the Caribbean coast, and one of the most important of Costa Rica.

Its beautiful white sand beaches, multiple palm trees, its turquoise colored ocean and its coral reef let its visitors enjoy a magnificent view.

This park has areas for camping and paths, where visitors can watch turtles spawning and practice surfing.

Among the variety of marine species that can be found in these  reefs it is important to mention: brain coral, elkhorn coral, queen angel fish, little Elizabeth fish, sea cucumbers, lobsters, turtles and thousands of colorful fish.

The most common species of the zone are: green, carey and baula turtles, Botrops snakes, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, sloths, squirrels, coatis, hummingbirds, and raccoons among others.

 

PUERTO VARGAS

This beautiful beach is also part of Cahuita National Park and is characterized by its abundant vegetation.

This area is formed by three sections: In the first one, the coral reef, makes the water quiet and crystal clear. The second one has darker sand and the waves are soft. The third section is an open seaboard with strong waves, since it comes to the end of Carbón river. This beach has been granted the Blue Ecologic Flag, which identifies it as a clean and safe place.

 

PUERTO VIEJO

Just as Cahuita, Puerto Viejo offers a variety of options for lodging, restaurants, discotheques, entertainment and tours to enjoy your visit.

This is a place where tourists will enjoy 24 hours of an authentic and natural atmosphere.

 

KEKÖLDI INDIGENOUS RESERVE

Near Puerto Viejo, this reserve is of great importance for the activities it promotes because the Bribris offer several services for the tourists' interest: an iguana breedding place, handicrafts, bows and arrows made of wood, bags, nets, hammocks, baskets, etc.  Furthermore, walks through paths can be done, and you wil be able to enjoy a rich flora and fauna.  It is also a special place for those who love birds, particularly predatory ones that migrate from the North to the South during January, February, October and November, you will be able to see: eagles, sparrowhawks and hawks.

Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful Waterfall of Cocles River, which can be visited with local guides.

 

YORQUÍN INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY

The name Yorquín or Yorkín has its origin in the river that begins at La Amistad International Park, in Panamá. Following this river up takes you to the Yorquín indigenous community, where visitors live a unique experience that combines the natural beauty of the zone with the activities and attentions of this model community that plants their own food and sells banana and cacao, and interchange them for other products. They make handicrafts that can be bought as a nice souvenir.
