The North Caribbean zone is formed by the Caribbean coast from San Juan River to Limón City, which is the main tourist center that at the same time works as a lodging center.

One of the main attractions that takes place at the beaches of Tortuguero National Park and Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge is the spawning of green turtles.  Barra del Colorado is also a favorite place of those who love sport fishing for robalo, sabalo and other species. Besides, this is where the river channel system that join Puerto de Moín with Barra del Colorado is found.  This constitutes a unique attraction and means of transportation.

This is one of the best places to observe fauna, known worldwide for the observation of turtles and birds.

Among the main tourist activities we can mention: recreational biking, cavalcades, hiking, scuba diving, canopy, visits to the Bribrí and Kekoldy indigenous reserves and the cacao plantations, among others.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

TORTUGUERO

It is the main area where Green, Baula and Carey turtles spawn.

There is a great amount of rivers, channels and lagoons used by the population and tourists, in order to sail through the park.  This allows people to observe the exuberant flora and fauna: land turtles, manatees or sea cows, crocodiles, great variety of crustaceans and about 85 fresh water fish species, including the garfish.

 

Moreover, mammals such as dantas, jaguars, ocelots, collard peccaries, monkeys, sloths and fishing bats, one of the biggest in Costa Rica are abundant in this zone. You can also find birds such as the green macaw (endangered specie), the peacock and the read headed urubu and the sparrowhawk that eats crab.

 

BARRA DEL COLORADO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

The coast area is 50 km ( 31 miles) and the channels, lagoons, rivers, forests, swamps, swamp forests and hills (former volcanic cones) are 92000 ha ( 227.337 acres). There are many paths so that you can go around the zone. Known worldwide for its sport fishing.  Several world records have been obtained. It is important to mention that to practice sport fishing you must have a license, given by the park rangers.

There is great variety of wildlife in this land, but it is not adequate for agriculture or livestock.

This is a tropical humid rainy forest environment which is very hot. Animal species  that can be found are: manatees or sea cows, caimans, crocodiles, garfish, and numerous sabalo schools.  Mammals such as dantas, jaguars, pumas, howler and spider monkeys, ocelots and sloths can be seen; and birds like the fisher eagle, toucans, neotropical cormorants, blue heron, tricolor heron, white sparrowhawk and others.

Its river channel system combined with beach ecosystems and wild marine life populations offer a unique landscape.

For those who enjoy walking, Cerro Tortuguero offers a good option to walk through paths for approximately 45 minutes.

Caño Palma: it is a narrow channel that takes you to a biologic station dedicated to research.
