It is also called Metropolitan Zone and is made up of the three most populated provinces: San José, the capital and cosmopolitan city, Alajuela (where Juan Santamaría, Costa Rica’s national hero, was born.  The international airport is located in this province and was given the name of this hero), Heredia, known as the “city of the flowers,” is full of historic wealth.  And last but not least, Cartago, where the Basilica of the Virgin of the Angels is located, Costa Rica's patron.    This territory is considered the main entry to Costa Rica (due to the number of people that enter from other countries).  It offers the possibility of enjoying a great variety of cultural and natural tourist attractions, among these the best museums in the country: Gold, Jade, Costa Rican Art, La Salle Natural Sciences, Insects at the University of Costa Rica, Contemporary Art and Design and Children’s, among others.  In San José you can find the greatest architectural treasure of Costa Rica, which causes great pride among the population: The National Theater. The Central Valley’s national parks are the ones responsible for protecting the main volcanoes of the zone: Poás, Braulio Carrillo, Irazú and Turrialba.  Roads have been constructed so that tourists can visit these parks and enjoy their flora and fauna.

Most of the government services can be found in San José. It is important to point out two beautiful natural zones of tourist and ecologic importance, found in the Central Valley, in Cartago: Turrialba and Los Santos Valley.

Living a little bit of what Costa Rica was in the past is possible in the Central Valley, by taking a look at the rural towns, its unequalled beauty, its bahareque houses, big ranches with coffee plantations, "trapiches” and milk houses.
