Corcovado is located in the life area of for the moist tropical forest in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica, and can say that no other wild area of the country protects the resources of plants and animals in this region. This wild area is considered an excellent living laboratory, where they can study the structure and functioning of tropical ecosystems and relations between them.
The very humid forests of Corcovado, are among the last holdouts still maintaining ecosystems very humid in the Tropical Forest, unchanged in the peaceful American, with rainfall exceeding 5,000 mm per year.
This park provides research and scientific studies, advocates and environmental education.
There are some 500 species of trees throughout the park, which is equivalent to one quarter of all tree species in Costa Rica. The tropical rain forest protects of the area not only what represents the best of these ecosystems in the peaceful aspect, but also the last one in the Central American region. 
The vegetation of the park consists mainly of a very humid tropical forest with the following habitats. The mountain forest, cloud forest, lowland forest, swamp forest, yolillal, herbaceous swamp, mangrove vegetation cliffs and vegetation from the coast.
The species of flora most characteristic are the nazareth, the poponjoche,the guayabón, the sangregao, the ojoche,the espavel and the maleCedro, among others.
The park protects a variety of species that are endangered as big cats and reptiles; also protects bird species endemic or restricted distribution. It is known the existence of 104 species of mammals, 367 birds, 117 amphibians and reptiles and 40 species of freshwater fish.
Among the most outstanding wildlife, we found the tapir, jaguar, puma, manigordo, the giant anteater, the cariblanco monkey; monkeys as the congo, carablanca, coloured and squirrel; limpets red, white sparrowhawk, the cock water pava grenadier. In addition, the king of zopilotes, the mountain chicken, pigeon house, the toucan beak or bicolor Curran, Catana or zapoyol, martín club, the chieftain and several species of hummingbirds. The park is one of the most important conservation areas, to protect the lizards and crocodiles.
