The Sukia´s Route

 

In this itinerary the hiker penetrates into the heart of the forestal reservation of Los Santos. The zone is destined to turn into the Olympus of the trekker in  Costa Rica. Here the visitors enjoy a great forest wealth and of an impressive fauna, some endangered species. The route starts by taking a 4X4 vehicle in Santa Maria de Dota, up to coming to the crossing of Las Rejas.

 

Here begins the walk that starts at 1600 meters height. On the way  it ascents and descents are between 1500 up to 1970 meters high, never the less the tendency is to  descend until arriving to El Silencio Cooperative  located on the sea level.  The trekker goes across various tiny villages and enjoys the incredible beauty of nature immersed in the diversity of various types of forests.  

 

From the typical oak groves of the Moorland up to palm trees with diverse fruits typical of the coast.  The program includes three nights of accommodation that includes tents in one of the nights. Full meals and bilingual guides experienced on the zone.  

 

Día 01. SANTA MARIA DE DOTA O SAN GERARDO DE DOTA / BETHANIA TENT CAMP

 

Very early our guide picks you up at your hotel in the Santa María de Dota Township.  Transportation in a 4 wheeldrive car to Las Rejas, located 15 Kilometers from Santa María de Dota.   The trek starts from here toward BethaniaTent Camp.  The initial altitud begins from 1766 meters of height and ends at 1007 Mts. On ascending and descending trails, until reaching La Flecha, the hikers walk for about 3 and half hours.  On the way they can enjoy the beauty three waterfalls, and a superb dense forest, with a great diversity of flora and fauna. Then the two hours descent starts to La Bethania Tent Camp.  Here you are hosted by a family living in the area, dedicated mainly to agricultural labor, and to attend the trekkers that pass by the area.  The accommodation here is realized in tents.

 

Lodging in Bethania Temp Camp: Capacity for 20 persons, 2 persons in each tent. Share Bathroom.

Día 02. BETHANIA TENTCAMP / SAN ISIDRO DE DOTA (RANCHO TINAMU)

 

This day afterbreakfast, very early departure with direction to Rancho Tinamu located to thenearby San Isidro de Dota village, at a height of 813 meters on sea level.While descending   it is possible toobserve the changes in the flora and the fauna; from the moorland to thetropical humid forest. Monkeys and other mammals, as well as a varied scale ofspecies of birds can meet during the way. Thewalk this day comprehends 7 Kilometers distance, and is done in a period from 5to 6 hours. San Isidro de Dota is a typical village of the rural zones of Costa Rica,located next to the Protective Zone of Cerro Nara, provided with exuberant greenforests. It is a region with an impressive water wealth.  Uncountable nascent of water are found on the way. It is one of the rainyiest zones of the country with precipitations of up to 5000 mm. From certain placesof San Isidro of Dota there are magnificent sights of the Savegre river basinand if the climate permits it, will be possible to observe el Cerro de laMuerte and a very beautiful panorama of the pacific coast

 

Lodging: Rancho Tinamu:  8 rooms, some ofthese equipped with bunk beds.  Sharedbath rooms. Cold water only.

Día 03. SAN ISIDRO DE DOTA (RANCHO TINAMU)/ QUEBRADA ARROYO (RESERVA LOS CAMPESINOS)

 

After breakfast departure towards Quebrada Arroyo whereLos Campesinos, (“The Vanilla Men”), reservation is located.  The descent this day reaches up to 300 m highon the sea level.  The first part of thetrip takes about three hours; it is realized on a secondary road, untilarriving to the Forestal  Protected Zone,Cerro Nara.  Later the descent begins towards Quebrada Arroyo. Thetrails here are surrounded with primary and secondary forests, and abundantwildlife. In Quebrada Arroyo there is a suspension bridge that demandsfrom  the visitor his best adrenalineand  a waterfall that shapes severalnatural swimming pools in which is inevitable the desire to take a refreshingbath. The lodging is in the rustic cabins of Los Campesinos with an incredible view towards the dense forest. The place is administered by the members of the community.

 

The Lodge counts with 8 cabins,all of them count with a small terrace, and private bath. Each cabin countswith 4 bunk beds.

 

 (**) Technical level: Medium.  Duration 5hours.  On a moderately difficult terrainwith a descent of 457 meters. Distance 14 miles.

 

 

 

Día 04. QUEBRADA ARROYO (RESERVA LOS CAMPESINOS) / SAVEGRE DE QUEPOS (ALBERGUE EL SILENCIO)

 

Departure to the Savegre de Quepos zone, the final destination of theSukia’s route.   From Los Campesinos tothe Savegre River the hiker enjoys a descendinglight walk of 3 and half hours, 7 kilometers, descending from Los Campesinos,passing through a trail bordering a forest in recuperation, until arriving atthe riverside. Here the river is crossed on a ferry cable. At the other side ofthe river the walk continues towards the small village of Santo Domingo.   Here the group takes a motorized vehicle totravel on the road that goes along the riverside up to the Cooperative ElSilencio. After lunch, time to get acquainted with the community of El Silencioand/or to rest. Accommodations at Coopesilencio lodge.

 

The lodge:  9 rooms, private bath,hot and cold water and television.

 

(*) Technical Level: Basic:  4 and half hours, descending sea level 175 abovethe sea leve.  Approximately 10kilometers distance.

 

Día 05. SAVEGRE DE QUEPOS (ALBERGUE EL SILENCIO)

 

After breakfast, departure to San José. .
