Preparing
yourself for the trek, includes the fact that you must arrive to San
Isidro de El General by 2 p.m. the afternoon before the start of the
trek, in order to prepare your luggage and be taken to the ranger
station for an early check in. This will allow you to start your trek
very early next morning, and sort the possibility to get wet on the way
to the lodge.
If you can´t make it that early, but no later than 5p.m. your luggage
will still be able to be taken to Base Crestones by the porters, but
you have missed the opportunity to do an early check in.
Day 1
On
the first day of the trek, we will travel by car from San Isidro de El
General to San Gerardo de Rivas at 1,300 meters a.s.l / 4,265 feet (20
Km trip, we will pick you up from your hotel in San Isidro at 4 a.m. in
rainy season and at 5 a.m. indry season). After an early breakfast in a
farmer´s house we will begin our hike to reach the Crestones Base Lodge
in Chirripó National Park at 3,372meters a.s.l / 11,063 feet. Our
journey in the tropical cloud forest will be a wonderful experience and
will take in average 8 hours. The half-way point will be Llano Bonito,
and here a picnic lunch will give us energy to continue. Four more
hours and we will arrive to Crestones Base which will give us shelter
for the following days. Dinner will make us warm before our first night
inChirripó. (B, L, D)
Day 2
Your
guide will prepare breakfast while you get ready for the hike in the
highlands. Today we will visit the highest peak in Costa Rica, Mount
Chirripo at 3,820 meters a.s.l / 12,532 feet, from where, weather
permitting, we could enjoy the amazing sights of the Pacific and
Atlantic Oceans simultaneously, as well as a panoramic view of the
placid lakes in the Moraines´ Valley and the Valley of the Lakes. A
picnic lunch at the top will certainly be the highest lunch in Costa
Rica. We will continue and visit Mount Terbi at 3,760meters a.s.l /
12,352 feet and Crestones, great rock formations of the park. Later,
back at the lodge we can take some time to walk along the Talari River
while a good warm dinner is prepared. (B, L, D)
Day 3
We
will get prepared to hike down the mountains after breakfast; the time
hiking down is usually shorter than on the way up. Many beautiful
things you didn´t see on the hike up, maybe because you were a little
tired, will appear to your eyes to give your trip the final touch. Once
we arrive to San Gerardo we will enjoy lunch and then travel back to
San Isidro. (B, L)
